Diagnostic Instruments, Inc. was founded in 1967 for the purpose of developing scientific research instruments. The company utilized early R&D to obtain over 20 patents related to microwave sensing technology. Other technological developments included high-resolution electrocardiograph systems, fetal heart monitoring systems, agricultural seed planter monitors, and valve seat inspection systems. In parallel, a separate part of the company started developing imaging technology for the scientific and microscope market. This endeavor developed into the high-quality microscope products now produced by Spot Imaging.
